Telephones
When we lived in Charlottesville, VA, I remember how we called our next door neighbor. We picked up the receiver and said to the operator, "W, on our line."
In Tuscaloosa, we also had a party line. There were four parties on the line, each with a distictive ring.  It was annoying when we wanted to make a call and one of the other subscribers were on the line, preventing it. It also, however, was a source of amusement. Mother sometimes listened in to the rednecks and reported to us how they planed to buy new underwear rather than taking a shower or bath.
